KARACHI, Feb 7: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) continued to play musical chairs, appointing Shahid Ali Khan juniors' "goalkeeping trainer" on Saturday, although he was dumped after last year's Champions Trophy, saying he failed to deliver.
First the PHF had ousted Shahid on the pretext that September's Asia Cup organizers allowed only four officials along with the squad. The Dutch physiotherapist Derek Verder was accommodated after Shahid's removal, although he trained the goalkeepers throughout the Asia Cup camp.
Surprisingly, PHF took an army of 16 "officials" to Kuala Lumpur as part of contingent, while showing Shahid the exit, and even refusing to add two players to the squad on manager Abdul Rashid Jr's request.
Later Pakistan hockey administrators changed their stance and claimed Shahid was removed since he failed to deliver. Pakistan goalkeeper Ahmad Alam, a Shahid trainee, gave a pathetic performance at Amstelveen Champions Trophy and Asia Cup.
Qamar Ibraheem, who has been attending International Hockey Federation (FIH) "coaches courses" since long, was also inducted as "video analyst" after brief stint with junior side as coach.
He too was removed later, PHF claiming he failed to give what was being expected. PHF has now asked Qamar to act as an "instructor" of a physical fitness training camp for the seniors.
A consolidated junior training camp is scheduled to begin from Feb 20 at Hockey Club of Pakistan for three forthcoming assignments.
A Test series against Dutch junior side from March 1 to 8 will be the first event before a March 8 to 15 triangular series with Malaysia. Junior Asia Cup, the qualifying round for the Junior World Cup, will be last of the three events which begins from April 20 here.
Meanwhile, Jahangir Butt has been named as new junior team manager replacing Col Abdur Rauf who has been banned from sitting on the bench by the FIH on a complaint by Poland for rash behaviour during practice matches against the Polish side.
Hassan Sardar was managing the juniors for an interim period before Jahangir's appointment.
Apart from Jan Mohammad, Ikhlaq Ahmad, who mostly played as reserve player for the national side, has been named to assist coach Asif Bajwa.
A PHF communique says probables for the camp were selected by the members of the selection committee during January's national junior championship in Karachi.
However, apart from Hassan and Saleem Nazim, neither the chief selector Akhtar Rasool nor selector Saeed Khan were present at the venue.
The existence of the "selection committee" has become a joke as senior team coach Roelant Oltmans recently overruled selectors by inviting and inducting discarded forward Mohammad Sarwar in the camp. The former skipper was forced to call it a day by the PHF soon after Amstelveen Champions Trophy.
Goalkeeper Mohammad Iqbal's inclusion in the list of 34 probables, indicates over-age players are being encouraged by the PHF. It would not be out of context to mention that Iqbal was caught red-handed by former manager Col Rauf for sending his brother for wrist test in his place.
Pakistan senior team centre-forward Shakeel Abbasi, who could never make a place in the junior side and recently toured Kuala Lumpur along with senior team for Azlan Shah Cup, has now been named as one of the probables.
