HYDERABAD, May 29: The director general of the Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA), Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director, EDO health and Sukkur Barrage chief engineer have been asked to report to S&GAD Karachi immediately , a district government official told Dawn on Saturday.

Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Mutawakal Kazi was asked by the chief minister on May 24, to conduct an inquiry and fix responsibility in the contaminated water issue which resulted into the death of many people.

The source said that director-general Hyderabad Development Authority DG Ali Ahmed Lund, WASA MD Kafeel Ahmed Khanzada, EDO health Dr Agha Tariq and the Sukkur Barrage chief engineer have been asked to report to the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD), Karachi, with immediate effect.

The source said that Hyderabad DCO Mohammad Hussain Syed, EDO works and services Habibur Rehman Memon, Taluka Health Officer (rural) Nazar Mohammad Junejo and Guddo Barrage Chief Engineer would take over additional charges as HDA DG, WASA MD, executive district officer health and Sukkur Barrage chief engineer, respectively.

Some recommendations have also been made by the chief secretary against Health Secretary Dr Ashiq Memon, who is scheduled to attend a course from June 1, the source said.

So far 13 people, most of them infants, have died in Hyderabad and Kotri since May 15 when press reports disclosed that contaminated water of Manchar lake had been released into River Indus.
