DADU, June 26: Hundreds of farmers staged a long march from the Mir Hassan Gadhi village to Khairpur Nathan Shah on Saturday to protest against the acute shortage of water in the channels originating from the Rice Canal.

The protesters covered a distance of 10 kilometres on the Indus Highway and then held a demonstration in Khairpur Nathan Shah as a result the vehicular traffic remained suspended for three hours in the town.

Speaking on the occasion, Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan district president Hafiz Mohammad Amin Jamali alleged that the irrigation officials sold water to influential landlords.

Consequently, he said, the water channels in Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka like Peejaho, Kalro and Kudan Wahs had dried up and the area farmers were unable to sow rice crop.

Later, the farmers observed a token hunger strike outside the Khairpur Nathan Shah Press Club.

KILLED: Four unidentified armed men barged into the house of Rahim Bukhsh Khoso in the Mazar Khoso village, Mehar taluka, on Saturday.

The armed men opened fire, killing Mr Khoso and injuring his wife, Kariman, and escaped.

The injured woman was taken to the taluka hospital in Mehar where her condition was stated to be serious.

Later, the relatives of the deceased, carrying the body held a protest demonstration on the Indus Highway and demanded early arrest of the killers.
