FAISALABAD, June 26: Five passengers, including two women, were killed and nine others sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between two buses on Chiniot-Pindi Bhatian Road on Saturday.

The fast travelling bus (SA-5840), bound for Rawalpindi, crashed into an oncoming bus from the opposite side when its driver lost control over steering. Consequently, five people including driver Muhammad Azam, Memona Naz, Islam Begum and Ghulam Hur, died instantly while nine others, including Shafiq, Naveed, Shafi, Tanveer, Aslam and Abid suffered serious injuries. They were shifted to the Allied Hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

PROTEST: Hundreds of women councillors of various unions and tehsil administrations staged a sit-in on Saturday to mark their protest against non-allocation of funds for their honorarium.

The protesting councillors marched through several city roads, carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans in favour of their demands. They chanted slogans against the TMAs and the district government, saying no honorarium had been given to them for the last three years despite agreements.

They blocked traffic on the Kutchery Road by holding demonstration. Some of them were beating their chests. They also staged a sit-in outside the offices of the Nazims.

Officials of the district administration and some elected representatives rushed to the scene and negotiated with the councillors.
