RAWALPINDI, July 31: In its anti-encroachment campaign launched on Saturday, the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) demolished two buildings at Sulemanabad (near Pirwadhai), it is learnt.

The constructions had been raised without approval from the RCB. One was an unauthorized boundary wall around a space erected by a land mafia whereas the other building housed a private school.

The anti-encroachment squad of the cantonment carried out the operation using heavy machinery. The operation went on smoothly as no specific resistance was put up by the owners.

The campaign will last for about a month in which all illegal constructions will be bulldozed and encroachments removed from all areas falling within the limits of the civic body.

Some unauthorized constructions raised by a former councillor and other influential people may also be demolished.

The RCB executive officer, Iftikhar Ahmad Mir, said the campaign had been launched to remove all the illegal constructions as they created problems for the public, hindered smooth flow of traffic and in some areas become security risk.

When asked whether the violators had been issued with any notice, he said a number of notices were served on them before taking the action.

Demolishing is the last resort, he added. He admitted that some influential people in connivance with the inspection staff had raised the constructions, adding
