HYDERABAD, Oct 18: The Sanghar district jail superintendent district on Monday assured the Hyderabad circuit bench of the Sindh High Court that a Hindu under-trial prisoner, Ghaman Bheel , was at liberty to enjoy his religious and cultural rights in accordance with the law and that the jail administration would not interfere in his religious matters.

Lal Chand, a caste fellow of Ghaman Bheel, had sent a telegram to the high court, submitting that the jail administration had told his relative that since he was a Hindu, he had no right to wear shoes inside jail and had to walk barefoot. He further said that Bheel had been badly tortured, with the result that he had fallen unconscious and received injuries. He prayed to the court to save the life of Ghaman Bheel.

The court had earlier converted the telegram into a constitutional petition and directed the jail superintendent to submit his statement.

The prison chief said in his statement that on Oct 1 he had called Bheel in his office and talked to him on the matter. He added that the prisoner had given his statement on oath, denying the contents of the telegram.

The superintendent said that Bheel had expressed ignoranceabout Lal Chand, saying that he was not his relative.

He said he had neither been tortured nor wounded in prison. The court disposed of the petition.

SSGC UNION: The Sui Southern Gas Company CBA workers union, severely criticizing the anti-worker attitude of the Human Resource general manager Brigadier (Rtd) Agha Ahmed Gul, has alleged that he is destroying the organization.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, the union president and the secretary-general claimed that instead of resolving the long-standing problems of the workers, the HR general manager had threatened to get rid of the union representatives.

It had become routine for the general manger to harass and blackmail workers by issuing charge-sheets and holding inquiries against them on insubstantial grounds, they alleged.
