HYDERABAD, Oct 20: Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo has condemned what he called government propaganda claiming that there is no difference of opinion among the provinces on construction of the Kalabagh dam.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, he said the people of Sindh had opposed construction of even the Tarbela Dam but it was thrust upon Sindh illegally and unconstitutionally.

He said at that time Sindh was assured that Punjab would get water from Tarbela only after requirements of Sindh were met. But, he regretted, Sindh was crying hoarse for water and Punjab was being supplied 33,000 cusecs of water from the dam.

Mr Palijo claimed that 80 per cent of Sindh's share of water was being stolen which had rendered thousands of acres of land in the province barren. He observed that Sindh had suffered losses to the tune of billions of rupees due to acute shortage of water. He said the real question was how to compensate Sindh for the losses and how to save it from further destruction.

He urged people to raise their voice against anti-democratic forces to foil conspiracies against the unity of the country.

Later, Mr Palijo met Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chief Dr Qadir Magsi and discussed the water issue with him. It was decided to convene a meeting of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee to evolve a strategy for launching a struggle against disputed water projects.

SST: The Sindhi Shagird Tehrik at its central committee meeting here on Tuesday called upon the government to allocate more funds for education.

The meeting demanded that all facilities should be provided at the Mahar Medical College and scholarships be awarded to students.

It criticized hooliganism in educational institutes and demanded that student unions should be revived. Azhar Buledi presided over the meeting.

RESIGNATION WITHDRAWN: A member of the federal council of the People's Party Parliamentarians, Zafar Ali Laghari, on Tuesday withdrew his resignation under pressure from party workers of Dadu and the provincial leadership.

Party activists of Khairpur Nathan Shah, led by district PPP vice-president Abdul Qadir and taluka president Noor Mohammad Chandio, staged a rally outside the local press club on Tuesday.

They raised slogans in support of Mr Laghari and distributed sweets after the party leader withdrew his resignation.
