FAISALABAD, Oct 24: The district administration teams have reportedly challaned over 300 shopkeepers and vendors and arrested nine shopowners for selling consumer goods at exorbitant rates.
The teams, headed by special judicial magistrates and officials of the district government, conducted surprise raids in different city localities, rural areas of Jaranwala, Samundri, Tandlianwala and Chak Jhumra.
The profiteers were challaned and forced to pay fine from Rs500 to Rs2,000 at the spot. Nine shopkeepers who were found selling fruits, vegetables and other kitchen items at higher rates were sent to jail after registration of separate cases.
GUJRANWALA: The district administration and police in joint raids on Sunday caught red-handed some 200 more shopkeepers for overcharging.
The teams led by special judicial magistrates raided shops in Gujranwala, Kamoki, Naushera Virkan, Wazirabad and Ghakkhar town and suburban areas and recovered Rs100,000 fine from the shopkeepers.
The district administration inducted district officer (revenue) Syed Najam Ahmad Shah to monitor and supervise the drive launched against shopkeepers and stockists during Ramazan.
On the other hand, the citizens complained that shopkeepers of sasta bazaars were selling substandard items at higher prices. They demanded that crackdown should also be launched against the milkmen who were providing impure milk even during the holy month of Ramazan.
