SAHIWAL, Dec 11: Hundreds of college students on Saturday demonstrated against handing over of the examination system to the Agha Khan Board by the education authorities.
Students from the Government College, Government Imamia College, Government College of Technology and other educational institutions took part in the demonstration on the call of Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT).
Led by student leaders Yasir Mazhar, Mutiullah Baloch, Afzal Shah Khagga and Nadim Bhatti, the protesters marched through different bazaars of the city.
The protesters threatened to continue their strike if the government did not withdraw its decision.
PROTEST RALLY: Traders on Saturday took out a protest rally against the police for their failure to control the dacoity, theft and other crimes.
The protesters started the rally from the Anjuman-i-Tajiran office and after parading through Deepalpur Bazaar, Sadar Bazaar and Jinnah Street reached Jogi Chowk. The protesters were carrying the banners inscribed with slogans against the police.
The rally was addressed by Anjuman-i-Tajiran president Muhammad Ashraf Chughtai, Union Council Nazim Sheikh Ejaz Ahmed Raza and other office bearers of the Anjuman.
The speakers alleged that the law and order situation in the city had worsened while the City SHO and his subordinates paid no heed to the rising incidents of dacoity and robbery. They also demanded the suspension of the City SHO.
Karyana Association chairman Haji Abdul Aziz and other office bearers also joined the protest.
GETS DEATH: A local court on Saturday handed down death sentence to one of the three bandits who killed a farmer during a dacoity bid.
The judge also awarded 30 years hard jail and fined Rs110,000 each to his two other accomplices.
According to the prosecution, convicts Alam Sher and his accomplices had killed Tabarakullah and injured his brother at Chak 72/4-R on Nov 14, 2002.
ARRESTED: Farid Town police on Saturday arrested an accused in an attempt to murder case when a local court released him on bail in two cases of drug peddling.
Harappa police had arrested Hafiz Tayyab in two cases of drug-trafficking.
