SUKKUR, Jan 29: Conditions worsened when a cavity in the pillar of span-1 of the Sukkur Barrage widened further from 1" to 1-3/4" during the rehabilitation work.

As a result, the glass fixed at the pillar to monitor the crack broke. The barrage authorities immediately closed the bridge for heavy traffic.

Later, glasses were fixed at the spot to monitor the crack.

The executive engineer of the Sukkur Barrage, Mr Yousuf Memon, said there was danger and the filing work had already been taken in hand.

He claimed the cavities were unearthed after the clearing of slit from the floor of barrage at upstream.

Meanwhile, a fountain of water erupted out of the floor near the span-1 when water accumulated at the right pocket near the cofferdam was being drained out.

The information was immediately passed on to the barrage authorities and FWO officials who immediately started work over it.

The FWO officials said the unearthing of cavities was natural and they did not pose any danger to the barrage structure.

They said information regarding new developments had been given to consultants and experts who would inspect the barrage thoroughly.

They said a geological team of German experts had said that there was nothing to worry about.

They said the work so far carried out had been done according to the advice of consultant agencies.
