KHAIRPUR, March 2: The embankments of the Mirwah Canal developed cracks at 20 places from the Shar regulator to Tay Manhan on Saturday night. However, villagers living nearby were able to plug them.

The newly-constructed watercourses near the villages of Imdad Ali Shar, Baqir Khan Leghari and Janwari had been damaged due to the use of substandard material.

The villagers were informed about the cracks through the loudspeakers of the mosques.

Responding to the call, villagers belonging to the nearby villages of Imdad Ali Shar, Rahim Khan Jalbani, Baqir Leghari, Shah Mohammad Leghari, Janwari, Daim Kabar and Thari Mirwah plugged the watercourses.

WATER BOARD: Meanwhile, a meeting of the social development cell, Nara Canal Water Board, was held under the aegis of the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) at the Nara gate, Chondiko, for handing over the waterways to growers organizations on Saturday.

Many growers attended the meeting in which Brigadier (retd) Abdul Haq, chairman, SIDA, was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Haq said that this is the third phase of the handing over of the waterways to the growers, and added that at least 25 canals are being handed over to farmers’ organizations.

Two other meetings were held in Mirpurkhas, where 57 waterways were handed over to the growers.

Mr Haq said that the process would continue till all 165 waterways of the Nara Canal had been handed over to the growers.

He said the SIDA has introduced a judicious system of water distribution which ensures water supply to small and tail-end growers also.

He said that some 150 farmers organizations had been formed which were headed by small and tail-end growers.
