NAWABSHAH Nawabshah district has been renamed as Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto district on Tuesday.

Four out of five MPAs of Nawabshah had moved a resolution at the first session of Sindh Assembly demanding the renaming of Nawabshah as Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto district to pay tribute to the great leader.

The resolution moved in the assembly was passed but there were some legal complications due to which the notification could not be issued.

The resolution was criticised by the great grand sons of Syed Nawabshah, the person after whom the district was named, as well as other quarters saying that they were also sad on the assassination of a great leader but Nawabshah was a historical district and if the PPP wanted to remember Shaheed BB, they may establish an institution in her name.

The Land Revenue Act was amended for this purpose and a new section 6-A was inserted giving powers to the Secretary Revenue to change the name of the district after which a notification 8/4/2008/Rev-1 (IV)/ 975 was issued by the additional secretary, Board of Revenue Hyderabad on September 15, 2008 in pursuant of resolution passed on April 8, 2008 using his powers to rename Nawabshah district as Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto district.

Amazingly, copies of the said notification were sent to all the concerned, including Cabinet Secretary Islamabad but no copy was sent to the district nazim of Nawabshah or any other district for information.
