KARACHI, Feb 26 Dr Badruddin XI, Habib Public School and Baldia Hockey Club triumphed against their respective opponents on the opening day of the Inter-club Hockey Championship-2009 at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) on Thursday.

The first match between Dr Badruddin XI and Saudabad Recreational Club (SRC) was won by the former 4-3. Left-in Faisal Raza opened for Badruddin in the 12th minute and left-out Mansoor Ali consolidated the lead in the 17th.

That`s when SRC`s centre-forward Adnan Ilyas and right-in Asfandyar scored in the 23rd and 24th minutes, respectively, to make the score 2-2. But the very next minute saw Badruddin`s fullback Nauman Ahmed scoring again to take the lead. The halftime score was 3-2.

The second session saw Badruddin`s centre-forward Shafqatullah adding one more in the 40th minute. Fullback Altaf Ali scored the third one for SRC in the 46th minute.

The second encounter between KDA and a school outfit — Habib Public — saw the school winning 1-0. The decider was scored by right-in Talha Mahmood in the 52nd minute.

In the day`s last match, Baldia Hockey Club totally outclassed Yazik by 11-2. Centre-forward Mohammad Ali (fourth, seventh and ninth minutes) and right-in Liaquat Ali (13th, 16th and 34th mins) scored hat-tricks, centre-half Mohsin (41st and 49th mins) and Wajahat Ali (47th and 62nd mins) scored two each and left-in Mohammad Bilal scored one (67th min).

Centre-forward Mehboob Ahmed (38th min) and right-in Arif Hasan (54th min) scored for Yazik.

Earlier, the championship, organised by the Karachi Hockey Association was declared open by Pakistan Hockey Federation Chairman Selection Committee Hasan Sardar, the chief guest on the occasion.

At UBL Sports Complex KWSB v Ex PTCL at 1.30pm; Airport Club v YMCA at 3.00pm at UBL; Akbar Bhatti Club v Al Sagheer Club at 4.30pm.

At HCP Police Boys v PSO at 1.30pm; Nawab XI v Iqbal XI at 3.00pm; National Club v Baldia Eagles at 4.30pm.
