HYDERABAD, March 19 Members of the district council paid rich tributes to Benazir Bhutto, slain chairperson of Pakistan People`s Party, here on Thursday for her struggle for democracy and initiating a process of reconciliation among all political forces of the country.

The members said over an out-of-turn tabled by Mehboob Abro that thanks to her efforts reconciliation process started in the country and President Asif Ali Zardari was working in that direction.

He said that Benazir Bhutto had been awarded posthumously human rights achievement award by the United Nations and that she was a woman of sterling personality and a recognised face of Pakistan all over the world.

He said that she worked for the betterment of people and counted major achievements of present PPP government. He appreciated the spirit demonstrated and role played by MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Afandyar Wali Khan and Fazalur Rehman for putting their weight behind the coalition government.

MQM`s Ghulam Rasool Samoon also supported the resolution and said that workers of the two leaders - Altaf Hussain and Benazir Bhutto - must work at grass-roots level for the prosperity of Sindh.

Rashid Khan lauded Benazir Bhutto`s services but expressed disappointment at the presence of only a handful of PPP-backed Awam Dost Panel members in the council when it was discussing their leaders` sacrifices.

He said that a conspiracy appeared to have been hatched against the present democratic government and President Zardari and came hard on the establishment. He asked PPP`s elected representatives to support the president.

Dr. Arif Razmi stressed the need for unity among people of Sindh whose leaders had been murdered because they had challenged the system. —Staff correspondent
