SUKKUR, May 25 Acute water shortage along with power outages is adding to the miseries of over one hundred thousand residents of new taluka Sukkur.

The hardest hit areas are New Pind, Golimar, Military road, Bhoosa lane, Allah Abad Colony, Micro colony and other localities. People on Sunday evening and Monday morning came out on streets in hordes and protested by carrying batons and slogans against the officials concerned.

Dejected people staged a sit-in outside the offices of taluka nazim and Water & Works while protesting on city roads.

Water crisis, they argued, was continuing since many weeks though a few days back they were assured by the MNA Noman Islam Shaikh of regular water supply while staging a sit-in outside his residence. All but to no avail, they wailed.

Naib Nazim Muhammad Naeem Bandhani of Council-15 supporting protesters said that the water crisis was continuing for the last about one year. He said that the reservoir in Adam Shah Colony was never filled to capacity leaving area without water though taluka nazim and other officials were reminded time and again.

Naib Nazim of New Taluka Sukkur Ghulam Murtaza Ghangro held the administration of old taluka Sukkur responsible for the crisis as the system was managed by them. Most of the staff working in Water Works was non-technical thus failing to fulfil their duties and in turn leading to water scarcity, he said.

Taluka Municipal Officer old taluka Sukkur City Abdul Shakoor Mahar clarifying the position said that water supply was managed in new taluka according to area needs and it was wrong to accuse technical and non-technical staff.

He said more than 100 illegal connections in new taluka were disconnected and he put the blame on 100-year-old underground pipelines. He said that the supply system was being monitored day and night to ensure regular water supply.
