KASUR, June 25 More than 90 lawyers, including the bar president, were booked here on Thursday under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly thrashing police and Lesco officials over a power theft issue.
Niaz Nagar SDO Muhammad Sadiq went to the farm of lawyer Azmat Munir in Dhollaywala village and asked him to deposit outstanding dues of Rs114,006.
According to Sadiq, Munir was using electricity despite a disconnection order. Munir and his family members scuffled with Lesco official after an exchange of words.
Lesco officials lodged an FIR against Munir at Sadar Police Station.
Sadar SHO Arshad Mahmood Sahi called both parties to the police station, where they had a scuffle again. Sadiq made a phone call to his office and called people from there.
Munir informed his colleagues at the lower courts, who allegedly told a judge that three layers had been detained at the police station illegally.
The judge appointed a bailiff who 'recovered' the lawyers from the police station and produced them in the court.
Sadar police and Lesco officials went to the court with the bailiff. It was on this occasion that a clash erupted between lawyers and Lesco officials. Later, the clash also involved policemen.
Constable Muhammad Yousuf resorted to aerial firing to 'disperse' the lawyers, who allegedly injured SHO Sahi. The lawyers scuffled with Sadar Circle ASP Waqas Ehsan.
In consequence, police registered a case against 90 lawyers, including bar president Sardar Nabi Ahmed and former secretary general Sardar Fakher Hussain.
Three more lawyers were booked in connection with this episode later.
In a press release issued later, the bar president asked the Supreme Court chief justice to look into the incident himself.
