ISLAMABAD, Aug 27 The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by PML-N Senator Zafar Ali Shah seeking a direction from the court to the federal government to initiate criminal proceedings under treason charges against Gen Pervez Musharraf.

The petition was returned by the court on the grounds that neither the mover has any locus standi nor the Supreme Court was a proper forum for seeking such directions. In his petition, the PML-N Senator had requested the apex court to order the federal government to commence proceedings under the High Treason (Punishment) Act, 1973, against Gen (retd) Musharraf for trial, conviction and sentence for committing heinous crime of high treason against its own people.

The petitioner had also challenged a provision in Section 3 of the High Treason (Punishment) Act, 1973, which required the federal government to move a reference for any proceedings under high treason and said this provision was against Article 6 of the Constitution which did not demand such condition.
