GILGIT, Sept 3 Hundreds of schoolteachers enrolled under the Social Action Programme (SAP) staged a sit-in outside the office of chief secretary Gilgit-Baltistan, seeking regularisation of services.

The protesting teachers, including women along with their infants, shouted slogans and demanded of the government to come up with the promises made from time to time regarding service structure for the Social Action Programme schools.

“About 1,100 teachers, serving in 540 schools would stop working if the government did not solve the issue,” said Maqsood Jan, president action committee. The protesting teachers were also joined by members of civil society and mediapersons.

A notification on Feb 10 was issued by the federal ministry of Kashmir affairs, saying that the SAP schools should be handed over to the National Education Foundation. The chief secretary and secretary education had moved a summary to the education ministry in this regard.

However, the protesters said that the matter was still hanging in balance and no action had been taken so far. The teachers on the occasion said that they would take to streets on Friday.
