ISLAMABAD Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has warned the government against putting on the backburner the proposed trial of former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

In a policy statement on the issue, PML-N's central information secretary Ahsan Iqbal said those who would try to save Gen Musharraf would be considered as 'equal partners in his crimes'.

'Musharraf's trial is the writing on the wall,' he said. Mr Iqbal said the government should initiate action under Article 6 of the Constitution and leave the rest to the court.

He warned that if the government tried to use delaying tactics, the people would take matters into their own hands as they did in the case of the deposed judges.

He claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari's 'recent admission' that a deal had been struck to save Musharraf's neck had sent a wave of disappointment among the people.

No one was authorised to pardon a person involved in heinous crimes, he added.

He accused the government of ignoring the electricity crisis. It was the wrong policy of the government that was forcing it to rely on rental power projects.

He also urged the government to explain its position on the US claims that $3 billion had been given to Pakistan since the start of Mr Zardari's tenure as president.
