THATTA, Sept 24 Some 1,800 students of Government Boys Degree College, Thatta, are suffering due to suspension of academic activities since demolition of their college building four months ago.

Soon after the demolition began, makeshift arrangements for classes were made in the commerce block of the college but they proved futile as the students found it difficult to concentrate on studies amid dust arising from the under-demolition building.

Pakistan People's Party MPA Humera Alwani, who recently visited the site along with parents of the students and members of civil society, was told by college principal Professor Wazir Ali Jakhar that the construction of the college building was stopped after the contractors took away construction material obtained from the demolished building, including some 30,000kg of iron, gates and windows.

The college staff and students informed the education authorities about the matter in a letter but to no avail.

The MPA was told that the construction of a small part of the building was going on but very slowly and that too not as per specifications.

The science block, four laboratories, two classrooms, staff room, principal office and library reception have been demolished and the playground is filled with debris hence students have no option but to stay at home.

The parents of the students requested the MPA to make efforts to ensure speedy completion of the building.
