KARACHI All schools and colleges across the province have been closed for four days due to security reasons following the twin blasts at the International Islamic University in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The government and private schools and colleges will remain closed from Oct 21 to 24, while all public sector and private universities across the province will be closed on Wednesday. The examinations scheduled for Oct 21 have also been postponed.
All educational institutions in the province falling within the jurisdiction of the federal government have been already closed since Monday.
Sindh Education Secretary Rizwan Memon confirmed that private and government schools and colleges in the province would also stay closed from Wednesday to Sunday.
Similarly, the universities will be closed on Wednesday, according to an announcement made by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad.
The governor, who is also chancellor of all public sector universities in the province, has convened an urgent meeting of the vice-chancellors of all universities on Wednesday to review the security arrangements at all higher education institutions.
According to a spokesman for the governor, the meeting will take some necessary decisions keeping in view the security situation in the country.
Dr Ibad remained in touch with the vice-chancellors even on Tuesday to keep himself abreast with the existing security arrangements at the campuses, the spokesman said.
He said that the governor was informed by university administrations that strict security arrangements were in place at the campuses and there seemed no problem in continuing with the academic activities. Yet the governor, with a view to protecting the lives of students and teachers, wanted to review the security measures at the meeting called for Wednesday.
Exams postponed
Meanwhile, the controller of examinations of Karachi University announced on Tuesday that all papers of BA, BEd and MEd scheduled for Oct 21 had been postponed. He said the new date of the examinations would be announced later.
Similarly, the NED University of Engineering and Technology has also announced postponement of all the examinations scheduled for Wednesday.
According to the registrar of the NED university, the new date of the postponed papers will be communicated later.
DUHS, SMC admissions
However, the coordinator for admissions to the Dow University of Health Sciences, Dr Rana Masood, has announced that all those seeking admissions to the DUHS and Sindh Medical College must submit their admission forms on Oct 21, which is the last date for submission of the forms.
When asked how candidates would submit the certificates, which they are required to get from their last attended school and college, when all educational institutions in the province would remain closed from Oct 21 to 24, she said that the candidates could furnish all such documents along with other essential academic and other original documents later. They could submit the documents once their names appeared in the merit list of admissions to be announced after the entry test.
About the online application forms available on the varsity's website (www.duhs.edu.pk) which the candidates are supposed to fill in addition to blue and pink coloured original application forms provided with the prospectus, she said that the online forms could be filled by Oct 24.
