LAHORE, July 29: Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has been re-elected unopposed Punjab president of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam).

Mr Arshad Lodhi has been re-elected secretary-general and Kamil Ali Agha as additional secretary-general, according to results announced at a meeting at the Muslim League House here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Elahi said the enthusiasm witnessed in his party was non-existent in other parties. He said the party had received 550 applications for 299 provincial seats and 125 applications for 148 National Assembly seats.

Mr Lodhi said while other parties had completed their elections within minutes, the PML(QA) had taken full four days to complete the exercise.

A total of 340 members of the council were also elected by show of hands. They will elect the central office-bearers.

Pervez rejected the demand by various people from the district that Bahawalnagar district Nazim Ali Akbar Vance should not be made a member of the general council. A resolution adopted by the meetng empowered him to nominate vice-presidents and joint secretaries as and when needed.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf’s Punjab information secretary Qudsia Lodhi, too, joined the PML(QA).
