ISLAMABAD, Jan 1 Top seed Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafik reached the quarter-finals of the Federal Cup National Ranking Tennis Championship by winning their respective matches with similar margins (6-2, 6-1) at the PTF Complex on Friday.

Aqeel defeated Heera Ashiq while Asim beat Wakeel Khan.

Shahzad, Taveer Ashiq, Mohammad Abid, Yasir Khan, Hamid-ul-Haq and Jalil Khan have also advanced to the last-eight round.

M. Abid from Lahore made a major upset of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Waqas Malik in a three-set match.

Shahzad from the PAF caused another upset of the tournament, beating sixth-seed Khurram Nazir 6-4, 6-4 in a close match.

Tanveer Ashiq faced tough resistance from Rashid Malik. He, however, won his match 7-6(2), 6-3.

Second seed Jalil Khan proved too good for Hassan Tariq, winning his encounter in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

Jalil would now face Hamid-ul-Haq in the quarter-final.

In the ladies singles event, Sarah Mahboob, Sara Mansoor, Ushna Sohail and Saba Aziz moved into the semi-finals.

Sara Mansoor hammered Anoosha Aslam 6-2, 6-2 while Ushna Sohail eliminated Shahid Farooq 6-1, 6-0.
