ISLAMABAD, Aug 4: Mian Azhar, the newly-elected President of Pakistan Muslim League (QA), said on Sunday that his party would sweep the coming elections.

Speaking at a press conference here, he said the PML(QA) was fully prepared to contest October polls.

To a question about return of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, Mian Azhar said his party had no objection if both these leaders return home and take part in elections.

He said both Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto had left the country on their own will.

To a question about allegations levelled by Ejazul Haq against election process, Mian Azhar said there was no truth in them and elections were held in a free and fair manner.

He said no discriminatory attitude was meted out to Ejazul Haq and the election commission comprised Chaudhry Shujaat treated him in equal manner.

When asked about the status of Ejazul Haq in the party after Saturday’s polls, Mian Azhar said: “Ejazul Haq is still an honourable member of the PML(QA) because no resignation has been submitted to the party secretariat so far”.

The PML leader said the intra-party elections were held strictly in accordance with the provisions of Political Parties Act, 2002, and all legal requirements including the setting up of an election tribunal were followed.

He said we had buried the politics of legacy and traditions through elections and the party had been taken out of the clutches of a few persons.

The PML chief said the party would work for the uplift and well-being of the poor people with major focus on employment, price-hike and economic revival.

He ruled out any chance of reunification with the PML-N even after the election of Shahbaz Sharif as president nor any possibility of alliance or electoral understanding with the PPP in the coming polls.

Expressing his confidence that his party would emerge as the single largest party in the parliament in coming polls, he said the party would achieve this objective by having electoral adjustments with other parties for which talks were already going on.

He said that he had already met Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed and would be meeting with MMA President Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani and hopefully an understanding would be reached on seats.

Chaudhry Shujaat had already held a meeting with Tahirul Qadri in this regard, he added.

Earlier, Chaudhry Shujaat announced results of the intra-party elections of women wing in which all the office-bearers were elected unopposed. Those declared successful included Neelofar Bakhtiar who retained presidentship and Dr Samin Jan (NWFP) was elected secretary-general. Other office-bearers included Dr Ruqaya, Rana Javed, Rifat Sarwar, Sitara Jabeen, Tahira Jabeen and Mehmuda Sultana.

Party secretary-general Mir Zafarullah Jamali, senior vice-president Syed Iftikhar Hussain Gilani, Fakhr Imam, Sarwar Cheema, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Begum Yaqoot Jamil-ur-Rahman, Azeem Chaudhry and other party leaders were also present on the occasion.
