HYDERABAD The usage of water from the Chashma-Jhelum Link has been a major bone of contention between the provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab.

But it seems that the issue has now poured out onto the streets as female protestors in Hyderabad staged a demonstration against, what they call, the unfair usage of water by Punjab here on Friday.

Female members of the Awami Tehrik party brandished lathis and burnt tires to express their frustration on the streets of Hyderabad. Awami Tehrik responded to a strike call by their party fueled by feelings of alienation at the hands of higher authorities, reports DawnNews.

This strike was specifically called to demonstrate against the usage of the Chashma Jhelum Link Canal by Punjab. The Awami Tehrik has also condemned the proposed project of a thermal power station at the Chashma-Jehlum Link Canal.

The President of the women wing of Awami Tehreek, Umra Samoon was also present at the protest.

Responding to the strike, the women halted all traffic. The National Highway and other roads connecting to various districts were blocked.

Analysts say that it is becoming increasingly clear that the people are not going to remain silent, as Pakistans water woes continue.

The protesters dispersed after the arrival of the woman police force.
