KOHAT Six persons were killed and three injured when two rival tribes exchanged fire in Doaba area of Hangu district on Tuesday.

Sources said that the members of Bangash and Wazir tribes faced each other in Jawar Ghundi area and traded fire. The exchange of fire left six persons killed and three injured.

The cause of enmity between the two tribes is an old land dispute. Meanwhile, a seven-member delegation of Hangu businessmen called on Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan Umerzai on Tuesday and lauded his efforts for brokering a peace accord between Shia and Sunni sects of the district before Muharram.

The delegation, led by Haji Khaid Akbar, requested the commissioner to compensate the shopkeepers, who kept their outlets closed voluntarily in January 2009 for two weeks.

The commissioner was told that businessmen of Hangu had already suffered huge losses due to continuous riots since 2006 and now they could not reestablish their trade without the support of government.

The commissioner told the delegation that peace was necessary for prosperity and business activities in any part of the country. He promised the traders that he would talk to the higher authorities for compensating the businessmen, who kept their shops closed for two weeks in January 2009.

The members of the delegation assured their full cooperation in maintaining peace in the region especially during Muharram.
