SUKKUR, Aug 19: Two hundred feet wide breach occurred in Noor Wah Canal of Jacobabad district on Sunday as a result four village and rice crop on thousands of acres of land submerged.
In the absence of the personnel of the Irrigation Department, the local people on self help basis tried to plug the breach but to no avail as the breach was wider and pressure of gushing water was enormous.
The breach was not plugged till filing of this report. The area people complained that 20 hours had passed but the no Irrigation staff had come to plug the breach.
They said that several complaints were earlier made to the Irrigation authorities concerned about the poor maintenance of embankments of Noor Wah but no notice was taken by the Irrigation officials.
They demanded of Sindh Governor Muhammedmian Soomro to conduct a high level inquiry into cause of the breach and take action against those “negligent” Irrigation officials who had failed to take an action to avert the breach despite the prior warnings by the villagers.
Initially the breach was of small size but with the pressure of water it widened up to 200 feet as a result the villages of Khair Mohammad Manjo, Mohammad Ramzan, Sikander Khoso and Mutassir Junejo came under water.
The house of the villages were inundated into knee deep water as a result their household goods were damaged and grain stocks were destroyed.
The agriculture land of the Sindh governor is also irrigated through the canal.
CLASH: Five prisoners of the Sukkur Central Jail-I, including Mashooq Ali, Sadiq and Anwer, were injured in a clash between two groups of the inmates here on Monday.
Seriously injured Ali was shifted to the local civil hospital.
Iron bars, blades and stones were used in the clash which according to the prison sources, was caused by a dispute over a teenage inmate.
The sources said that the Sial and Dahri groups of the prisoners wanted the prisoner boy to stay in their barrack.
The clash erupted in the barrack No 6, circle 2, and spread to the entire jail.
The Frontier Constabulary was called to control the situation and all the prisoners were locked in the barracks.
When a search was made of the barracks, hundreds of objectionable items were recovered from different barracks.
Eleven prisoners — including Ghulam Nabi Sial, Mohammad Siddiq Sial, Wahid Dahri, Dilshad Dahri, Fakir Dahri, Mir Dahri, Sher Dahri, Mashooq Ali Sial and Rustam— were sent to the solitary confinement ward.
A case was registered against the clashing prisoners.
BODY: The body of a local villager, Sajjan Teghani, was recovered by the police from Begari Canal on Monday. Gunshot wounds were found on the body.
A case has been registered against five persons.
