NAWABSHAH, May 5 Weather became pleasant and people of Nawabshah district and adjoining areas heaved a sigh of relief after the first rainfall of summer on Wednesday.

Nawabshah city, Sakrand, Daleldero, Sabu Rahu and Saeedabad received the first rain followed by a windstorm.

Official Munir Leghari of the local met office told Dawn that maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 44 degree Celsius, however it went down to 32 after the rain. He said that more rains were expected in the coming days.

Incidents of trees felling and power cables snapping were reported from various parts of the district besides motorcycle slipping cases.

Hesco discontinued the electric supply to the city as well as other towns with the rainfall.

It is feared that the rain may damage newly-sown cotton crop and harvested wheat crop kept open in various wheat procurement centres. However, the district food controller was not available for comments.

Mohammed Hakim Khaskheli, president of the Sindh Small Growers Association, Nawabshah chapter, said that the rain at this time would destroy cotton saplings and harvested wheat crop.

He said that although the rain was not heavy growers may suffer loss which may increase in case of more downpours.

Executive District Officer Agriculture Dr Karim Bux Leghari said that maximum quantity of the harvested wheat had already been moved from the district.

He said the cotton crop would benefit from the rain because of shortage of water.
