ATTOCK, June 23 Confusion prevailed here for quite some time on Wednesday when around 80 vehicles carrying supplies for Nato forces in Afghanistan were parked near the Attock bridge, on the main GT Road, and some private TV channels reported that they had been denied entry by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to sources, the vehicles had been parked near the bridge because there was no space for them in the transit camp for Nato supply vehicles in Peshawar.

Earlier reports suggested that the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had denied entry to the vehicles because of security concerns.

Sources said the three-hour stay of the heavy trucks, trawlers and oil tankers near the bridge affected the flow of traffic on the GT Road.

After receiving information, officials of district administration, police and other law-enforcement agencies reached the spot. They discussed the situation with their counterparts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and then urged the drivers to take the vehicles back to Rawalpindi.

However, according to the sources, the drivers had just started their journey back towards Rawalpindi when they received message from their camp in Peshawar that arrangements had been made and they could enter Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

DCO Shakeel Ahmed told Dawn that the confusion was created because the district administration had not been informed why the Nato vehicles were being parked at the bridge.

Another official said the decision of sending the vehicles back to Rawalpindi was taken in view of recent attacks on Nato vehicles. He said presence of Nato vehicles in such large numbers could create a law and order situation.
