STOCKHOLM, July 1 Gunmen shot and killed a professional Swedish football player and another man early on Thursday in southern Sweden, according to police and the player's club Assyriska.

The football player was identified as Eddie Moussa, a 26-year-old striker for the second-tier club Assyriska. The second man has not yet been identified to media.

Police said the men were shot at a place used for card games in the Ronna area of Sodertalje, about 30 kilometres south of Stockholm.

Police are searching for two or three gunmen who escaped from the scene on a scooter, which later was found burning nearby. No suspects have yet been identified, police spokeswoman Bjorn Engstrom said.

He gave few other details of the shooting, which also left a third man injured and in stable condition.

“Assyriska is in deep mourning and shock after the tragic news that one of our players has passed away,” the club said in a statement.—AP
