Water shortage in Thatta

Published July 12, 2010

ON a recent visit to my agricultural lands in Mir Pur Sakro, I found that there was an acute shortage of water. The people living there told me that the water shortage was at its peak as a consequence of which it was impossible to cultivate crops.

I asked them whether irrigation officials were not supplying water or was it actually not available. They answered in the negative.

There has been a tussle between Karachi and Thatta on water issues.

I learnt that instead of supplying water to Thatta some of its due share was being handed over to Karachi, neglecting the fact that interior Sindh is the main source for agriculture.

Thatta must be given its due share of water so that it may be able to play some role in the country's prosperity. Besides, it will also provide a livelihood to its locals.

I hope that the authorities concerned will start giving Thatta its due share of water.
