Impoverished Pakistani pugilist Dildar Ahmed, who won medals on national and international levels, will receive Rs 200,000 as financial assistance from the Pakistan Sports Board.

Dildar's tally of medals came most notably at the Asian Games (bronze in 1990), SAFF Games (gold in 1989). He also won several silver and bronze medals in international events in Egypt, Kuwait, Thailand and Denmark. The heavyweight boxer was also a consistent champion on the domestic level.

Despite his achievements, Dildar soon faded away after retirement but recently made the headlines when he was reported selling his medals in order to feed his family.

“We requested the Pakistan Sports Board to assist the former national boxer, who is facing financial constraints and thankfully the PSB has agreed on the grant,” PBF President Doda Khan Bhutto told PPI.

He said that the prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani would himself give away the cash to Pakistan boxing star during an Independence Day ceremony in Islamabad.
