MULTAN, Sept 2: The Election Commission has shown prejudice against the south Punjab by not setting up an election tribunal here.

This was observed in a hurriedly-called meeting of the executive committee of the Multan High Court Bar Association with its president Muhammad Arif Alvi in chair here on Monday.

The meeting was convened to deliberate upon the pros and cons of the ECP decision to hear elections-related appeals of Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan (former) divisions in Lahore. “This is the first time in the electoral history that Multan has no election tribunal,” a press note of the bar said.

The meeting agreed that the chief election commissioner had failed to perform his duties.

“By setting up election tribunals only in Lahore, where the government wanted to get desired results in the elections, would prove costly and time-consuming to candidates of this region in pursuing their appeals.”
