GUJRAT, Sept 5: A PPP local leader, Ayub Butt alias Ayub commander, was shot dead in an ambush on Bhimbher Road in Civil Lines police precincts on Sunday afternoon.

Reports said as soon as Ayub Butt driving a car approached Bhimbher Road from the street of his house, some unidentified assailants opened fire, killing him on the spot.

Ayub is said to be a close aide to Federal Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar. The motive behind the incident could not be ascertained, however, the police have registered a case against unidentified suspects on the report of Ayub's brother Abdul Qayyum.

Scores of Pakistan People's Party workers rushed to Aziz Bhatti Shaheed hospital where the body was shifted for autopsy.—Correspondent
