LAHORE, Sept 13: In order to personally assesses and monitor the flood situation in Sindh, especially in the Manchare-Dadu area, Wapda Chairman Shakil Durrani along with his technical team spent three days, including the Eid day, there and held a meeting with the provincial administration and Engineering Corps at Sehwan Cantt.

The meeting was attended by Sindh Irrigation Secretary Shuja Ahmed Junejo, Army Engineering Corps representative Brig Asif, Wapda technical team, comprising member (water) Syed Raghib Abbas Shah and General-Manager (Projects), South, Ali Sher Baloch, and other officers concerned.

The meeting discussed at length the situation arising out of the devastating floods at Main Nara Valley Drain (MNVD) and Manchar Lake. The meeting was informed that the water level in Manchar Lake had risen to an alarming level and immediate remedial measures were required.

The meeting dilated upon the various options to shift the flooding water to the Indus in view of water level in the lake. Wapda as well as the Sindh irrigation department put forth their proposals in this regard.

Speaking on the occasion, the Wapda chairman said the technical team had been monitoring the flood situation quite vigilantly on all the components of Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD) projects including Hairdin Pumping Station, Hamal Lake, MNVD and Manchar Lake.

He said sensitive dykes of the MNVD were being strengthened constantly to avoid threat of breach. The chairman said Wapda would continue providing technical support to the provinces in addition to making arrangements for protection of its own projects.
