NEW YORK, Sept 19 Pakistanis and leaders of other communities opened their hearts and wallets for flood affected people, contributing more than $101,000 on Saturday night at the residence of the ambassador of Pakistan.

Members of Jewish, Christian and Indian community attended the event.

The event, organised by Dr Zoovia Hamiduddin for International Rescue Committee (IRC) which is active in flood relief work, was also attended by Ambassador of India to the United Nations Hardeep Singh Puri who suggested that Indian and Pakistani community could jointly organise fund-raisers.

On Friday Mr Puri handed over a cheque for $26 million from the Indian government to the Secretary-General of United Nations for flood relief work in Pakistan. This was in addition to $5 million announced earlier.

Ambassador Puri said that despite reports to the contrary Indian citizens felt strongly for Pakistan's flood victims.

Dr Hamiduddin said that Jewish people helped raise funds along with members of other communities in New York.

The participants were treated to rendition of Sitar by Ustad Aklhaq Husain.
