KARACHI, Sept 27: A young employee of the Pakistan Steel Mills and a retired soldier were gunned down in separate attacks in different parts of the city on Monday, officials said.
Zaheer Abbas, a 29-year-old employee of the PSM, was targeted at a bus stop near his residence in Gulshan-i-Hadeed as he was waiting for a bus to reach his workplace in the morning.
“The victim was a resident of Gulshan-i-Hadeed Phase V,” said an official of the Steel Town police station. “He received a single bullet fired from a very close range by a man who was seen running shortly after the firing.”
The body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities before being handed over to the victim’s family.
“Zaheer, an employee of the Pakistan Steel, was to be married in two months.
The murder seems to be motivated by personal reasons,” the police official said.
A retired sepoy of Pakistan Army was gunned down in Model Colony, police said. They added that Mohammad Bashir, in his late 40s, was heading to Malir Cantt on a motorbike when he was seen falling down on a road near the Mehran Depot.
“A few roadside vendors earlier saw the motorcyclist riding very slow and then falling down near the Mehran Depot,” said Model Colony SHO Sub-Inspector Javed Farooqi. He said they rushed towards him and found him lying unconscious drenched with blood with a single bullet wound in his upper torso.
The victim was shifted to an ambulance but he died on his way to the JPMC, the SHO added.
The documents found in his belongings showed that he was associated with a private educational institution situated in Malir Cantt. “Some Rs8,000 and two cellphones were also found in his possession,” the police official said.
“He served in the Azad Kashmir Regiment of army before retiring a couple of years ago and joining a private organisation,” he added.
