KOHAT, Oct 1: Police on Friday seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition being smuggled from tribal area to Punjab and arrested two smugglers here on Indus Highway.

Officials said that they had been receiving information for the past several days that an attempt would be made to smuggle arms from Darra Adam Khel to Punjab via Kohat. They said that several police teams were deputed at all the entry points from the tribal regions of Orakzai Agency and Darra Adam Khel to foil the attempt.

They said that on Friday a police party signalled a pick-up van near new toll plaza on the Indus Highway and during the search recovered huge quantity of automatic weapons and ammunition from the secret cavities of the vehicle (J-9851).

The two arrested smugglers identified as Zubair and Tahir Zaman, residents of Sherpao village of Charsadda district, later told police that they had been assigned the task to take the consignment to Waziristan Agency from where it was to be smuggled out to Punjab.

Riaz Khan police station officials have started investigations after registering case against the accused. TRIBESMAN KILLED: One tribesman was killed and two others were injured when unknown armed men ambushed a vehicle carrying a tribal family to Orakzai Agency near Karawal area in Kohat on Friday.

According to Ustarzai police, armed men opened firing on a vehicle going from Kohat to Orakzai Agency on the Marai road. As a result, Abdul, resident of Sheikhan area of Orakzai Agency, was killed while a four-year-old boy Shawal and Riaz sustained bullet injuries.

Ustarzai police have started search for the attackers after filing a case.
