KARACHI, Oct 28: Unseeded Zaid Noor Sumar won his maiden men’s singles Sindh ranking title when he edged past Omer Shahid in straight sets final in the 10th STA development series tennis championship at City Sports Complex on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Zaid, who has recently returned from Dubai after completing his education, displayed awesome craftsmanship while routing his opponent 6-3, 6-0 before select audience. His two other siblings Saif and Saad were knocked out in the initial rounds.

Promising Mustafa Zaidi fought tooth and nail while overcoming Farhan Mustafa in gruelling three-set duel to clinch juniors’ under-17 crown. Zaidi recovered from one set down to post 6-7, 7-5, 12-10 victory.

The ladies singles title went to Maheen Dada who carved out 6-3, 6-2 win over Zoya Khan in the final. Hassan Siddiqui captured the boys’ and girls under-15 title defeating Malik Hamza 8-2.

Teenagers Hassan Farooq and Houd Azher won the boys’ and girls’ under-11 and boys under-9 singles titles respectively.

Meanwhile, the boys’ and girls’ under-13 final and boys’ under-15 doubles final could not be played due to bad light and deferred for Friday afternoon at Defence Club.

Final results:

Men’s singles: Zaid Noor Sumar bt Omer Shahid 6-3, 6-0.

Ladies singles: Maheen Dada bt Zoya Khan 6-3, 6-2. Juniors’ under-17 singles: Mustafa Zaidi bt Farhan Mustafa 6-7, 7-5, 12-10.

Boys’ and girls under-15 singles: Hassan Siddiqui bt Malik Hamza 8-2. Boys’ and girls under-11 singles: Hassan Farooq bt M. Raza Sawani 8-5. Boys’ under-9 singles: Houd Azher bt Mohammad Dada 8-4.
