The Karate Kid movies have been around for quite some time and are loved by kids as well as adults all over the world. However, this new one is far more entertaining in terms of action and special effects. The highlight of the movie is of course the lead pair comprising Jaden Smith who is the son of veteran actor Will Smith and everyone’s favourite marshal arts hero Jackie Chang.

The young Smith stars as 12-year-old Dre, who is forced to leave his hometown with his mother, to a completely new environment in the city of Beijing, China. As Dre tries to adjust to the new culture and surroundings, he befriends a local girl named Mei Ying. However, this friendship earns him the animosity of a gang of local bullies lead by an adroitly skilled kung fu fighter, Cheng. After getting a brutal beating from Cheng and his cronies, Dre is rescued by the eccentric and enigmatic Mr Han. He heals Dre’s wounds using a special technique called fire cupping that makes Dre aware of the knowledge and skill that Han has.

Mr Han and Dre go to Cheng’s Kung fu teacher for reconciliation but end up accepting his challenge of a fight between Dre and Cheng in an upcoming tournament. Dre’s hopes lie on Mr Han’s very odd teaching and guidance. Dre is frustrated at first but soon he realises although distinctive, Mr Han is an excellent teacher.

The action sequences are a treat for every kung fu fan. Also the movie will teach them some very useful stuff about this intricate and fascinating form of martial art. It is definitely a must watch for every Karate Kid fan and if you have missed out the previous flicks of the series, do check out those too. — Zahra Hassan
