KARACHI, Dec 7: Sukkur beat Karachi 4-2 on penalty strokes to lift the NBP Inter-regional Women Hockey Championship trophy at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) here on Tuesday.
The winners were decided on penalties when the scoreline remained 0-0 during regulation time. For Sukkur, Shaista, Nayantara, Samam Bhutto and Zaibunissa managed to convert the penalty strokes while Zakia failed the task.
For Karachi, it was only Fatima Kiran and Uzma Lal who remained on target as Sukkur's goalkeeper Tehmina kept vigilant under the bar to block the three other tries.
Acting Governor Sindh Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the chief guest on the occasion, gave away the trophies, medals, cash and individual prizes. Also present were Chairperson Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Women's Wing Khushbakht Shujaat and President Sindh Women Hockey Association (SWHA) Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto with SWHA Organising Secretary Lubna Baloch.
The winners were presented with the winners trophy and Rs15,000 while the runners-up were awarded Rs10,000 along with the runners-up trophy.
The bronze medal went to Hyderabad after Larkana failed to play the third-position match due to shortage of players when several girls in their team fell ill.
Fatima Kiran of Karachi was declared best player of the tournament and Shama Baloch of Hyderabad the best goalkeeper.
The prize for top scorer went to Larkana's Sambreen Abbasi who scored six goals. Meanwhile, Zakia of Sukkur was named player of the final while Tehmina, also of Sukkur, the better goalkeeper of the final.
