THIS is apropos of the article ‘For the love of books’ (Feb 6, Books and Authors). It gives me immense pleasure to read about Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the largest modern library in the Middle East and Africa. Egypt has been a great source of disseminating knowledge across the globe, in general, and the Muslim world, in particular. Bibliotheca Alexandrina proves how much the people of Egypt are keen about promoting the knowledge of and education in the country.
As against this, all governments in Pakistan have failed to give priority to libraries.
There is no doubt that well-equipped libraries are needed for gaining knowledge as they change the destiny of a nation.
Having five colleges and the Balochistan University campus, Turbat is the second largest city of the province but it badly needs a number of libraries. Teachers feel difficulty in preparing their lectures because they are not able to get proper material in the absence of good libraries.
As a result, the teachers’ professional integrity and commitment have been badly compromised. Similarly, students are handicapped and are not able to expand the base of their knowledge.
In this scenario many good students are getting frustrated.
The federal education minister and philanthropists should build well-equipped libraries in Turbat to facilitate students and teachers alike.
