Benazir Park

Benazir Park

Sir, On a recent Sunday we happened to visit the Benazir Park at Boating Basin. As my father is a diabetic he needed to use the restroom. On inquiring, to my astonishment it was revealed that such a large and well-maintained park had no such facility.

Then my kids asked for water. On asking the security guards it was revealed that if someone feels thirsty he or she must get water from a nearby eatery.

The situation in many other parks of Karachi is similar while even some major shopping malls lack such basic facilities. Hence, I would like to urge the authorities concerned to arrange to get an appropriate law promulgated for parks and shopping plazas to have clean, filtered and cold water and properly maintained toilets installed and maintained by the owners/operators/tenants/occupants.

And the authority concerned should also depute inspectors to monitor and conduct surprise checks at the facilities on a regular basis so that life can be made easier and more comfortable for the general public, especially the elderly. MOHAMMAD FAYYAZ KIRMANI Karachi KESC responds Sir, With reference to a letter by Syed Mustafa Kamal appearing in Dawn’s Metro Mailbag on April 11, 2011, the KESC has taken prompt action against the power theft in Safari Heights Apartment Complex, Block 15, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, and installed 18 new meters, rearranged open wires and covered the ATB and sealed it.

Another 100 meters are on the way to be installed in the same project within a couple of days. This will possibly block the way of illegal use of electricity.

We are thankful to Mr Kamal to have pointed out the electricity theft. The KESC encourages and invites all Karachi citizens to share any hint or piece of information about electricity theft in their neighbourhood through your mailbag, or to write to us directly at speakup@kesc.com.pk.

Utility bills Sir, Presently, utility bills of the PTCL and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board are not being accepted for online payment. This is another addition to the difficulties of the people.

I suggest that in the interest of millions of people of Karachi the PTCL and KWSB should make urgent arrangements for online payment of their utility bills, just as in the case of electricity and gas bills.

MOHAMMAD KHAN SIAL Karachi

Water scarcity Sir, I would like to point out the problem of water scarcity in my area to the authorities concerned. In most parts of my locality residents have been complaining to the local authorities about water scarcity for long, but without any positive results.

It is a shameful fact that people here are not getting sufficient water for their daily requirement. Water shortage causes a great disturbance in my daily schedule and I, along with other residents, have to face a lot of difficulties in everyday matters due to this.

The main issue is not that of water scarcity, but of water mismanagement. The system of providing water in the buildings is not as efficient as it should be. The chairman of every apartment complex takes no interest in these issues. A meeting is held every week in which residents can put up complaints, but the chairmen are hardly ever present. Therefore, the complaints remain unheard.

In the light of the above, I would request the KWSB to make proper arrangements to resolve the issue of water mismanagement in our area.
