KARACHI, April 30: Punjab subdued Islamabad 2-0 in the final to win the PSB Inter-provincial boys’ under-14 tennis championship at the Customs Sports Complex on Saturday.
Hasnain recovered from a set down to beat Mudassir Murtaza 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to give comfortable lead to Punjab in the best of three final while Zaid Mujahid completed the rout with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nofil Kaleem.
Islamabad had a disadvantage as they carved out 2-1 victory over hosts Sindh in the second semi-final earlier in the day. Sindh, meanwhile, seized third place outplaying Fata 2-0 in the playoff. Hasnain of Punjab was given Rs10,000 by the PSB. Results:
Second semi-final: Islamabad bt Sindh 2-1 (Mudassir Murtaza bt Ibrahim Iltifat 6-0, 6-2; Nofil Kaleem lost to Azhar Abdul Qadir 1-6, 6-3, 6-7; Nofil Kaleem and Mudassir Murtaza bt Ibrahim Iltifat and Marib Malik 6-2, 7-5).
Playoff for 3rd-4th positions: Sindh bt Fata 2-0 (Azhar Abdul Qadir bt Asadullah 6-3, 7-5; Nazif Ahmed bt Jibranullah 6-0, 6-2). Final: Punjab bt Islamabad 2-0 (Hasnain bt Mudassir Murtaza 3-6, 6-3, 7-5; Zaid Mujahid bt Nofil Kaleem 6-3, 6-1).
