THATTA, May 3: District Administrator Mohammad Jafar Abbasi has declared Thatta sensitive area after detection of a polio case in the village of Haji Mohammad Siddiq Jatt in Shah Bandar taluka.
Expeditious efforts should be made to curb the crippling disease, he said at a meeting in Makli Gymkhana held to review the measures being taken in connection with the anti-polio drive to be run from May 9 to 11.The DCO declared the affected village and its vicinity as “special zone” and directed for re-administration of polio drops there.
Deliberating upon the cause of surfacing a polio case, the DCO said that arrival of some people from the neighbouring area of Golarchi for participation in a funeral in the village might have resulted in the viral transaction of the disease which infected 18-month-old Shahida Jatt.
He said that parents' refusal to allow immunization of newly-born babies could also be reasons behind the problem.
He said foolproof measures were being taken in the coastal area to check and control spread of the disease.
He criticised performance of the workers and officials involved in polio-eradication campaign and warned that no negligence would be tolerated in future.
The DCO said control rooms had been established at his office and the EDO health at Makli would strictly monitor the campaign.
