RAWALPINDI, May 3: After failing to use the funds for development projects in the current fiscal year, authorities in Rawalpindi have started spending money on ‘landscaping’, claiming it will give the city a clean and green look.

Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) will spend Rs30 million on the landscaping, which also includes construction of a ‘palace’ for portraying the culture of Potohar region. Currently the banks of the Leh Nullah have been leveled at different points, including Moti Mahal and Gawalmandi. On a narrow strip of Leh Nallah, saplings have been planted.

Authorities in Rawalpindi district have thus far been able to consume only 40 per cent of the funds released by Punjab government during financial year 2010-11. They have completed only 30 per cent of the development schemes supposed to be completed this fiscal year.

In the last minute rush to use the unspent money, the authorities are planning landscaping, construction of model villages, upgradation of dispensaries and providing furniture to schools and colleges.

The authorities have also purchased some 110 garbage containers, besides providing new uniforms to sanitary workers.

Director General RDA Makeen Shahbaz said the funds were being spent on modifying the physical features of the city,

including building of roads, landscaping and tree plantation.

“We want to give a new look to the city. We are spending Rs30 million on the beautification of the city.” —Our Reporter
