HYDERABAD, May 10: A windstorm with the speed of 35 knots hit the city at 5pm on Tuesday while a mild storm continued throughout the day, said metrological office.

The storm damaged the poles thus affecting power supply. Many mango orchards reported falling of fruits which were at the ripening stage.

Several areas were deprived of electricity because of the damaging of two poles, each of 11KV.

Water supply from Latifabad unit-4 filter plant too, was affected after the pole supplying power to the plant was knocked down. Supply to some areas was restored after 8pm.

Hesco spokesman said that a transformer connected with Poly-II feeder was damaged on Thandi Sarak affecting power supply to GoR and Panhwar colonies. The construction wing staff came into action immediately, afterwards.

Three poles of Latifabad-4 feeder also tumbled down besides falling of trees. Some pockets of River Bunds along unit-4 were without power supply until 9.30pm when the report was being filed.

In all, 13 feeders got affected with 11 energised and work on the remaining two was being carried out.

A similar storm was reported from Nawabshah and Badin and growers feared mango crop damage.

A mango grower Zain Shah from Nawabshah said that windstorm was not unusual but this damage would make a huge difference on account of less crop size this year around.

Powerful winds were reported from Badin.
