DADU: Teachers hold demonstration

DADU, Oct 23: A large number of teachers of various primary schools of Dadu taluka staged a demonstration outside press club here on Wednesday.

They were protesting against the purchase of school furniture on high rates.

Led by the president of the All Sindh Primary Teachers Association, Dadu taluka, Abdul Rehman Panhwar, the teachers were carrying banners and placards and raising slogans against contractors and officials concerned of the education department.

Talking to the protesters, Panhwar said the World Bank had provided funds of millions of rupees for purchase of furniture for schools through the school management committees but officials had purchased it through contractors on higher rates.

He said the contractors had not purchased the entire furniture.

He demanded of the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Establishment to probe into the misappropriation of funds and seize the relevant record.

He threatened to launch a series of protest demonstrations and said the teachers would boycott classes if no action was taken against the officials concerned.

HOLIDAY: Dadu District Nazim Malik Asad Sikandar has announced Oct 26 as a holiday throughout the district on account of the annual Urs of Qalandar Lal Shahbaz.

SOLDIER KILLED: An army official was killed and five others were injured when an army vehicle collided with a jeep on the Super Highway in front of the Wadi-e-Mehran Hotel, near Nooriabad, on Monday night.

The army vehicle, which was headed for Karachi from Hyderabad, collided with the jeep as a result of which a soldier, Mohammad Saleem, was killed on the spot and five other army personnel were injured.

Among those who were injured was a captain, Maaz, and four soldiers — Mohammad Arif, Khalilullah, Irshad, and Ashiq.

The injured were taken to the CM Hospital for treatment.

The police impounded the jeep.
