In and around Bahawalpur

After scanning the city for a ‘food’ that defined Bahawalpur, one came to the conclusion that it was probably sajji – roasted chicken. There were little stalls selling it throughout Bahawalpur.

On a closer inspection, two pieces of sajji look like people tied to a burning stake.

Taken from a bridge in Panjnad – an area where all of the Indus rivers meet – children bathe in the Indus river. The sandy earth on which they sit was once part of the Indus’s riverbed. This side represents the water that eventually goes into Sindh – the other side of the bridge shows no ‘dry patches’ and the water from there is diverted to the adjoining areas in Punjab.

With the sweltering summer heat and the mighty Cholistan desert encompassing it, the city of Bahawalpur is beautiful. No ice-capped mountains or lush green forests here, but the town and its surroundings are special in its own way.

The best way to spend your days in the city are to take a trip to the Bahawalpur Zoo, Noor Mahal, Uch Sharif, Derawar Fort or an outing on the banks of the Panjnad Canal. Round up the summer evenings with a trip to the roadside hotels offering sajji, followed by thick, sweet tea and enjoy the bliss.  – Text and photos by Madeeha Syed
