KARACHI, July 12: An uneasy calm on Tuesday prevailed in Lyari with reports of intermittent firing in certain areas and an arson attack that left an office of the Kutchhi Rabita Committee partially burnt.

No casualty was reported due to firing though the body of a young man bearing torture marks was found stuffed in a gunny bag early in the morning.

Some shops were seen closed in the vicinity of Shah Abdul Latif Road, while markets in most parts of Lyari remained open.

The KRC office in Street No 2 of the Moosalane area was set on fire, police said. However, they added, the premises was partially burnt in the act of arson.

The body found stuffed in the gunny bag in Barafwali Gali near Old Haji Camp was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities, an official of the Kalokot police station said.

The body didn’t bear any gunshot wound and marks on the victim’s neck indicated that he might have been strangled to death, the official said.

He said the victim was wearing trousers and shirt and his hands were tied up.

The victim, who was later identified as Abdul Majid, 21, son of Abdul Shakoor, had been missing since Monday night, the police said, adding that he was a resident of Bhimpura, Ranchhorline.

The police said it seemed that the victim had been killed somewhere else before his body was dumped in the Barafwali Gali.

The police later registered an FIR (93/2011) under Sections 302 (premeditate murder) and 34 (with common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified persons on a complaint of the victim’s cousin, Abdul Rauf.

Man killed in Orangi

In Orangi Town, a man believed to be a former police informer was shot dead by armed men.

Mohammad Aqeel, 27, was at a teashop at Qaddafi Chowk when he was targeted by two men riding a motorcycle, said an official of the Orangi Town police station.

The victim died on the spot and his body was later shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities, the police official said.

Body found

A decomposed body was found from the hilly area close to a cement factory within the remit of the Manghopir police station, officials said. The body was shifted to the civil hospital for legal formalities, the police said.

Arrests

The Crime Investigation Department of police on Tuesday disclosed arrest of five suspects, including an alleged member of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan.

CID SP Aslam Khan told a press conference that two gangsters, Sohail Abro and Sirajuddin, associated with the Arshad Pappu group were arrested from Khadda Market of Lyari.

The police seized four AK-47 rifles, two repeater guns, 10 hand grenades, one 7mm rifle, and two pistols found in possession of the suspects.

The SP also claimed that a TTP member was arrested in Ittehad Town of Baldia. The suspect, Ali Imran, was wanted in several cases of terrorism in Swat, he said.

The police seized a pistol found in his possession.

He said the CID police also arrested four men for their alleged involvement in kidnap for ransom and murder cases.

Nabi Ahmed, Nadeem, Chand and Asif were arrested in a raid on the Mauripur Truck Stand, the police said. The officials claimed recovery of arms and ammunition from their possession.
